<p>This week our students did an exceptional job on the projects, tests, and other assessments in our classes, and we&#8217;re so proud of their many accomplishments.  It&#8217;s great to see our students prioritizing and proactively completing assignments in our classes.  The skills students learn and practice in middle school will help  in high school and prepare students  to be successful members of society.  As always, we sincerely appreciate you supporting our efforts!</p>
<p>The Patriotic Wolves team would like to welcome Mr. Sposoto, Wakefield Middle School&#8217;s new Principal, to the Wakefield Middle School family.  We&#8217;ve been so fortunate that Ms. Tullis, Ms. Fricke, and Mr. Sellars have done such a phenomenal job in the absence of a principal, and sincerely thank them for the added sacrifices they made over the past few months in order to ensure our team&#8217;s continued success.  We&#8217;re so fortunate to have such great leadership at Wakefield Middle School, and we look forward to working with Mr. Sposato and all the administrators this year to provide a safe, welcoming, and engaging academic environment for our students.<br />

General Team Information:</strong><br />
Please take a moment this weekend to check with your student to make sure their signed progress reports have been returned to the appropriate teacher.  It is essential that we receive signed progress reports from all of our students.</p>
<p>This week The Patriotic Wolves teachers continue our Tuesday after-school tutoring.  Our team is available after school until 5:00 pm to help students in our core classes. Please make sure your student has a ride home at 5:00 PM.</p>
<p>Remember, March 10th is an early release day, where students are dismissed at 12:30 PM.  School will resume as normal on Thursday.</p>
<p><strong>Ms. Adamson – Math (Overflow Teacher)</strong> – sadamson@wcpss.net</p>

<li><strong>Algebra</strong> students will continue to explore polynomials.  They will be adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials.  They will also learn to use polynomials to solve problems involving geometry.</li>
<li><strong>Math 8</strong> students will review stem-and-leaf plots.  They will also learn to display data on various types of graphs, and they will learn to identify misleading graphs.</li>
<li><strong>Math 8 Plus</strong> students will continue to work on their statistics unit.  They will be learning to display data on various types of graphs including scatter plots.  They will also learn to identify misleading graphs.</li>
<li>Students are welcome to come to my room for extra help during CSI time.</li>
</ul>

Students should begin to think of a person to research for their Wax Museum Activity.  All students should read 20-30 minutes each night.  Share a book or a news article with your parents.</p>

Students did a great job on their Civil War tests, and the grades are now in the SPAN system.  Students will have an opportunity to earn extra credit next week.  This week we finished the Civil War, learned about Lincoln&#8217;s assassination, and studied reconstruction efforts in the South.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Monday </strong>- Students turn in Reconstruction packet they received today.  Reconstruction, Election of 1876.</li>
<li><strong>Tuesday</strong> &#8211; African Americans Lose Rights, &amp; Industrial Growth</li>

<p>Students may stay after school on Monday, March 8th from 3:30 &#8211; 4:15 PM to participate in the WMS mini clean-up.  Students should then write two paragraphs that describing what their efforts to clean up WMS had in common with reconstruction in the south.  Students will receive 10 points extra credit.  Other extra credit opportunities will be available throughout the year.</p>

<p>We can hardly believe it is already March and we&#8217;re half way through the third quarter.  On Friday students received progress reports in each of their classes.  In addition to reviewing your student&#8217;s academic progress, now is also a great time to refill your student&#8217;s supplies of pencils and paper, along with making sure your student&#8217;s binders are organized.  We sincerely appreciate your support!</p>
<p><strong>General Team Information:</strong><br />
If you haven&#8217;t done so already, please take some time this weekend to review your student’s academic progress in each class, sign the progress reports, and have your student return them on Monday.  If you have a question or concern regarding an assignment or grade, please first discuss the issue with your student, and then email the teacher directly.</p>

What an awesome activity students experienced reading Art! Students were able to analyze different holocaust paintings and held opened class discussions.  Next week, students will read a short story and work on their Holocaust Think-Tac-Toe projects.  Students in 5th period will read art and continue to review The Diary of Anne Frank.</p>

<li><strong>Monday-</strong> Spider Vocabulary students will scan the selection, Sherlock Holmes in “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” by Sir Arthur C. Doyle and look for unfamiliar terms; using dictionaries, students will write three antonyms and synonyms for the terms.  Read the mystery independently.</li>
<li><strong>Tuesday</strong>- Students will complete the reading selection, “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” and respond to a series of questions.</li>
<li><strong>Wednesday</strong>- In class workday on the Holocaust Think-Tac-Toe project.</li>
<li><strong>Thursday</strong>- Continue to work on Holocaust Think-Tac-Toe projects.  Study Guide for the comprehension test.</li>

On Friday students received the first page of the review sheet for Tuesday&#8217;s exam on the Civil War.  Most students finished the sheet in class.  Students also received information for their Wax Museum projects, and should start thinking of potential historical figures.</p>

<li><strong>Monday</strong> &#8211; Signed progress reports will be collected and entered in SPAN.  Students will receive the second page of their Civil War test review sheet for Tuesday&#8217;s test.  We will play a review game for the last part of the period.  Students who scored below an 80% on their Causes of Civil War II quiz will receive remediation activities that must be completed by Thursday.  They will re-quiz on Thursday in class.</li>

<p>We had a great week this week, and we’re so proud of our students’ successes in no only our classrooms, but also sports and the arts.  It’s great to see our students excel in both our classrooms and also their extracurricular endeavors.</p>
<p><strong>General Team Information:</strong><br />
The Patriotic Wolves team intends to win the Box Tops for Education contest this quarter, and we need your help!  If you have any Box Tops for Education labels, commonly found on many products, please have your student turn them into the colorful box in Ms. Starr’s room.  As always, we appreciate your support!</p>
<p>Spring pictures are on Wednesday, February 24th.  Students may choose from five poses and see picture proofs before they buy any pictures.  Proof portraits, a price list, and further instructions will be sent home later for review.  All students will be photographed, and your student may be included in any group portrait requested by the school.</p>
<p>We continue to be available after school every Tuesday to assist students in their core classes.  Please make sure your student has a ride home at 5:00 PM.</p>
<p>Next Friday students will receive progress reports from each of their teachers.  Be sure you ask your student to see their progress reports’ when they come home on Friday, as they’ll need to be signed and returned on Monday.  Remember, you may view your student&#8217;s progress online in real time by using the WCPSS SPAN system.</p>

What an awesome time the students had completing their Virtual Tour of Anne Frank’s House.  Students were able to see actual family pictures, study maps of Germany and more.  Students in 5th period will continue to work on their mini reports and brochures related to “Flowers for Algernon” and begin working on the holocaust.</p>

<p>We had a great week this week, and it was great seeing our students do such a great job on the assignments and activities this week in our classes!</p>
<p>We would like to thank Ms. Gleeson, our Team Parent, for organizing our Valentine&#8217;s Day celebration.  We also thank and great parents for contributing Valentine&#8217;s Heart treats for our students to enjoy today.  We&#8217;re so fortunate to have such supportive parents!</p>
<p><strong>General Team Information:<br />
</strong>This is a reminder that Monday, February 15th is a regular day of school for students.  Monday is a make-up day due to the recent weather and associated school closings.</p>
<p>The Patriotic Wolves teachers continue to be available every Tuesday after school until 5:00 PM to help students in our core classes.  This is a great time for students to receive additional help, work on projects, or study for upcoming assessments in a structured setting.  We ask that you make sure your student has a ride home at 5:00 PM.</p>
<p>The WMS Student Services department is hosting a Parent Night on Thursday, February 18 from 6:00-7:30 P.M.  The event will be held at the Fox Road Elementary School Media Center.  Presenters will be sharing information with parents about helping students with test preparation, study strategies, homework preparation and organization.  You can pre-register by contacting your child’s counselor (Dr. Inscoe) or register when you arrive on the 18th.</p>
<p>On Monday your student will receive picture information for both Spring pictures and Ident-A-Kid&#8217;s photo ID.  Both picture opportunities are completely optional.  See the information you student brings home next week for additional information.</p>

On Friday I was thrilled to see the unbelievable Civil War projects students turned in.  Students did a great job creating visual displays, civil war recipes, written documents, and many other fantastic projects.  I&#8217;m extraordinarily proud of the students who turned projects in on Friday!</p>
<p>Parents, I take pride in how well our team communicates with parents, and feel that it is an important part of encouraging student success.  As we continue to prepare your student for the transition to high school, it&#8217;s important that students take an active role in their success.  I will no longer email home the second semester regarding missing assignments, projects, etc.  With our weekly email blast, website, and SPAN, you have immediate access to the information you need in order to ensure your student is doing well and turning in his or her assignments.  Please check SPAN regularly, and most importantly speak with your student nightly, to ensure that assignments are being turned in on time and your student is successful for the remainder of the year.</p>

<p>Today was an exciting day on the Patriotic Wolves team!  Students were rewarded for their hard work this quarter with personalized Patriotic Wolves pencils.  Additionally, we recognized fourteen students who exemplified one of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  We&#8217;re so proud of our students&#8217; many accomplishments during the first semester, and thank you for your past monetary donations that made this celebration possible!</p>
<p><strong>General Team Information:</strong><br />
This morning students received report cards from their homeroom teachers.  We ask that you review your student’s academic progress, sign the report card, and have your student return it to his or her homeroom teacher on Monday.  We will provide your student a copy of their report card when he or she returns the signed original.  If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with your student first, and then email the teacher directly.</p>
<p>The Patriotic Wolves teachers continue to be available every Tuesday after school until 5:00 PM to help students in our core classes.  This is a great time for students to receive additional help, work on projects, or study for upcoming assessments in a structured setting.  We ask that you make sure your student has a ride home at 5:00 PM.</p>
<p>This is a reminder that Wednesday, February 3rd is an early release day, with students being dismissed at 12:30 PM.</p>
<p>The next school dance &amp; activity night is on Friday, February 5th from 6:00-7:30 PM.  The PTSA is also selling stuffed Valentine’s bears that students may adopt or send to a student or faculty for $2.50.  Both stuffed Valentine’s bears and dance tickets may be purchased during lunch on Tuesday-Friday the week of the dance.  No dance tickets will be sold at the door.</p>
<p>The PTSA is sponsoring a Spirit Night at Milton&#8217;s Pizza on Monday, February 8th from 5:00-10:00 PM.  Milton&#8217;s will donate 20% of all sales to our PTSA.  Come out and support by enjoying great food from the Milton&#8217;s Pizza near the school.</p>
<p>The WMS Student Services department is hosting a Parent Night on Thursday, February 18 from 6:00-7:30 P.M.  The event will be held at the Fox Road Elementary School Media Center.  Presenters will be sharing information with parents about helping students with test preparation, study strategies, homework preparation and organization.  You can pre-register by contacting your child&#8217;s counselor (Dr. Inscoe) or register when you arrive on the 18th.</p>
<p>Wakefield Middle School is looking for community members to assist with proctoring the End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) Exams.  Exam dates are as follows:  EOGs May 14th &#8211; 19th, EOG make-ups and EOC exams May 26th – June 4th.  Volunteer proctors need to be available from 8:00am – noon (approximately). If you are interested in assisting, contact our Testing Coordinator, Annette Stegner (<a href="mailto:astegner@wcpss.net">astegner@wcpss.net</a>), with your available dates and make sure you are a registered volunteer at our school.</p>

<li><strong>Algebra</strong> students will begin a new unit.  They will be solving systems of linear equations and inequalities.  They will learn different methods to solve them, and they will learn to write a system of equations for real world problems.</li>
<li><strong>Math 8</strong> students will continue to review volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders.  They will also discover how changing dimensions effects perimeter, area and volume.  Students will also be completing Blue Diamond tests.</li>
<li><strong>Math 8 Plus</strong> students will discover how changing dimensions effects perimeter, area and volume.  They will also be completing Blue Diamond tests.</li>
<li>Students are welcome to come to my room for extra help during CSI time.</li>

All students are trying to earn a reward day on Friday, February 5th, for reading four nights consecutively. On Thursday students spent the period with Dr. Inscoe and Dr. Harper from Student Services going over options for high school classes, and today we continued our study of events leading to the Civil War.  Students should continue working on their Civil War projects that are due on Friday, February 5th.</p>

<li><strong>Monday -</strong> Abolitionists and The Underground Railroad.  Students receive Underground Railroad Diary assignment, due Wednesday.</li>
<li><strong>Tuesday</strong> &#8211; Manifest Destiny and the West.  <em>Unfortunately I will not be be available after school for tutoring due to a prior commitment.</em></li>

<p>Parents, we do hope that everyone is doing well in this new year of 2010.  Since we have the greatest parents, I have some favors to ask of you again.  I&#8217;ll write them in bulleted points to make it easier to understand and read.</p>
<ol>
<li>I need 160 apples on Thursday, February 4th, 2010, so that our wonderful students can enjoy completing a comparison lab of &#8220;Earth to Apple&#8221;.  If I have enough apples for all, then the students will be able to eat their own apple at the conclusion of the lab.  So if possible, please send in some bags of apples by Thursday morning.  I&#8217;ll be more than happy to receive them earlier in the week.  It doesn&#8217;t matter what variety or color of apple, and I&#8217;ll wash them so you don&#8217;t have to do that.</li>
<li>Also we&#8217;re getting short of the &#8220;Disinfecting Wipes&#8221; on our team.  With all the labs that we do, and all our &#8220;little germs&#8221; we do lots of wiping down in our rooms.  We greatly could use some more containers of the wipes to use in our classrooms.</li>
<li>We&#8217;re seeing many students without pencils and papers, so extra packs of these supplies would be greatly appreciated by our team.</li>
</ol>
